Sañjaya said: In the battle-formations, many terrifying cries arose. As that exceedingly dreadful slaughter of the foremost heroes went on, the din and dread of war swelled on every side.

The verse underscores the moral gravity of war: even when fought by renowned heroes, battle culminates in fear, chaos, and the ruin of the very best. It implicitly invites reflection on the cost of conflict and the heavy burden carried under kṣatriya-dharma.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that, across the army formations, terrifying cries and tumult arose as a dreadful, ongoing slaughter of eminent warriors unfolded—serving as a closing note to the chapter’s depiction of a confused and intense engagement.
