Inquiry into the qualities of Earth and the classification of beings
sañjaya uvāca | tatra tatra hi dṛśyante dhātavaḥ pañcabhāutikāḥ | teṣāṁ manuṣyās tarkeṇa pramāṇāni pracakṣate |
Sañjaya said: In various realms, the material constituents born of the five elements are indeed seen. Human beings, relying on reasoning, set forth the proofs for them—thus grounding their understanding of the world in inference and evidence rather than mere assertion.

The verse highlights an epistemic stance: the world’s material constituents (derived from the five elements) are observable, and humans articulate their validity through tarka (reasoning) and pramāṇa (standards of knowledge). It points to disciplined inquiry—evidence and inference—as a responsible way to speak about reality.
Sanjaya continues his report by making a reflective, philosophical observation: across different realms, the five-element-based constituents are perceived, and people attempt to establish and explain them through rational proofs—setting a contemplative tone amid the larger war-epic context.
