Sañjaya said: “There arose the crack of whips and the blows of the elephant-goad, the clashing din of weapons, and the pealing of bells as the great elephants charged at one another. All these sounds together swelled into a terrifying roar, fit to make the hair stand on end—an aural image of war’s moral darkness, where living beings are driven and struck so that armies may advance.”

The verse is primarily descriptive, but it implicitly highlights the grim cost of war: even animals are coerced by whip and goad, and the collective din symbolizes how violence overwhelms discernment—prompting reflection on dharma and the human responsibility behind organized harm.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra the terrifying battlefield soundscape: whips and goads striking, weapons clashing, and bells ringing as elephants rush at each other—signaling the escalation and ferocity of the fighting.
