Droṇa–Dhṛṣṭadyumna-yuddha (द्रोण-धृष्टद्युम्न-युद्धम्) — Tactical duel and allied interventions

sañjaya uvāca | bhīmasenas tava sutaṃ duryodhanam ayodhayat |

Sañjaya said: Bhīmasena engaged your son Duryodhana in combat. In the press of battle, the proud and boastful Duryodhana—an old adversary—was met directly by Bhīma, as rivalry and arrogance drove the clash between these foremost warriors.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how pride and long-standing enmity intensify conflict in war; ethically, it cautions that abhimāna (arrogant self-assertion) fuels destructive rivalry even among great warriors, contrasting with the ideal of disciplined action guided by dharma.

Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Bhīma directly takes on Duryodhana in battle, marking a focused confrontation between two principal opponents whose hostility is well established.
