sañjaya uvāca | śṛṇu me vistareṇedaṃ vicitraṃ paramādbhutam | bharatānām abhūd yuddhaṃ yathā tal lomaharṣaṇam, rājan |

Sañjaya said: O King, listen to me in detail to this wondrous and supremely astonishing account—how the war of the Bharatas came to pass, in a manner so strange and awe-inspiring that it makes the hair stand on end. Having first bowed to the wise Vyāsa—son of Parāśara—by whose grace I have obtained divine knowledge and extraordinary powers of perception, I now begin to narrate this marvellous and thrilling war of the Bharata lineage exactly as it happened.

Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds the ethical discipline of truthful transmission: Sañjaya frames his report as faithful narration grounded in the authority and grace of Vyāsa. It emphasizes that extraordinary knowledge and perception should be used in service of accurate witnessing and responsible speech, especially when recounting a catastrophic war.

Sañjaya addresses the king and announces that he will describe, in full detail, the astonishing and hair-raising Bharata war. He signals the beginning of his account by invoking Vyāsa (son of Parāśara), whose blessing enables Sañjaya’s divine sight and other supernormal capacities needed to report events occurring far away.
