Sañjaya said: “O great king, the regions known as Mahāmeru, Mahākāśa, Jalada, Kumudottara, Jaladhāra, and Sukumāra are so designated.”

The verse underscores the immensity and ordered structure of the cosmos by listing traditionally known regions. In context, it supports the ethical frame of the epic: dharma is not a private preference but a principle tied to the maintenance of cosmic and social order.
Sañjaya is reporting to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra and enumerates named regions as part of a broader descriptive passage. The narration expands beyond the immediate war setting to a panoramic, cosmographic register, emphasizing the scale of what is being revealed and contemplated.
