Karna said: “From every direction he heard sweet words—spoken by people who had come from many lands. At that time King Duryodhana, noble by nature and capable of destroying all enemies, raised his right arm—vast like an elephant’s trunk and trained in the discipline of weapon-strikes—and, accepting the folded salutations offered from all quarters, listened to their pleasing speech.”
कर्ण उवाच
The verse highlights a model of kingship where public honor and courteous reception coexist with martial readiness: a ruler is praised for strength and training, yet also for listening and acknowledging the people’s reverence—suggesting that power should be accompanied by dignity and responsiveness.
Karna describes Duryodhana at a moment of public acclaim: people from many regions offer salutations from all directions; Duryodhana raises his powerful, well-trained right arm and accepts their folded-hand greetings while listening to their sweet words.
