Inquiry into the cause of Arjuna’s recurring hardship

Book 14, Chapter 89

Vaiśampāyana said: What was done by the Kuru king, emulating Marutta—following the path of the great King Marutta—such a magnificent act of renunciation as King Yudhiṣṭhira performed at that time, no other king in this world will be able to accomplish.

Educational Q&A

True kingship is measured not merely by power or conquest but by tyāga—ethical renunciation and generosity—performed in conscious imitation of righteous exemplars from the past.

Vaiśampāyana praises Yudhiṣṭhira’s extraordinary act of sacrifice/renunciation, stating that he followed the precedent of the ancient king Marutta and that no other king in the world could match such a deed.
