प्रकृत्यात्मकमेवाहू रज: पर्यायकारकम्‌ । प्रवृत्तं सर्वभूतेषु दृश्यमुत्पत्तिलक्षणम्‌,रजोगुणको प्रकृतिरूप बतलाया गया है, यह सृष्टिकी उत्पत्तिका कारण है। सम्पूर्ण भूतोंमें इसकी प्रवृत्ति देखी जाती है। यह दृश्य जगत्‌ उसीका स्वरूप है, उत्पत्ति या प्रवृत्ति ही उसका लक्षण है

prakṛtyātmakam evāhu rajaḥ paryāyakārakam | pravṛttaṃ sarvabhūteṣu dṛśyam utpattilakṣaṇam ||

Vāyu said: ‘Rajas is declared to be of the very nature of Prakṛti, functioning as the principle of transformation. It operates within all beings and is seen everywhere; the manifest world bears its mark—its defining sign is arising and ceaseless activity.’
