Kārtavīrya–Samudra Saṃvāda and the Jāmadagnya Precedent

The Brahmin said: “O goddess with lotus-like eyes! Thereafter King Kārtavīrya, inflamed with great wrath, came to the hermitage of the great seer Jamadagni, to Paraśurāma, and with his brothers and kinsmen behaved in a hostile and unseemly manner. By his offenses he disturbed the high-souled Paraśurāma. Then Paraśurāma’s immeasurable splendor—able to burn enemy hosts to ash—blazed forth. He raised his axe and in an instant hewed down that thousand-armed king, as one fells a tree with many branches. Seeing him slain and fallen to the earth, all his relatives gathered; taking up swords and spears, they rushed at Bhārgava (Paraśurāma) from every side.”
