Vāyudeva said: “O Pārtha, I once made you hear the secret teaching and also caused you to understand the eternal truth—the Sanātana, the Supreme Reality that is itself the very form of dharma. I also described to you the everlasting worlds. Yet you did not retain that instruction because of your own lack of discernment; that is deeply displeasing to me. It seems impossible now for those matters to be recalled in full.”
The verse stresses the transmission of a confidential, eternal dharma-centered truth (sanātana-tattva) and the moral responsibility of the listener to retain and live by it; forgetfulness born of poor discernment is portrayed as a serious failing.
Vāyudeva addresses Arjuna, reminding him that he had previously been taught secret, eternal knowledge and even the description of the everlasting worlds, but Arjuna failed to remember it; Vāyudeva expresses displeasure and doubts that full recollection is now possible.
