Vāyudeva said: “O Bhārata, perfection is not attained merely by renouncing external possessions such as kingdom and wealth. Even if one renounces what pertains to the body, perfection may arise—or it may not—depending on the inner disposition and understanding.”

Educational Q&A

Renunciation of external possessions alone does not guarantee spiritual accomplishment; even bodily austerity or bodily renunciation is not automatically fruitful unless accompanied by the right inner understanding, intention, and disciplined mind.

Vāyudeva addresses Yudhiṣṭhira (called ‘Bhārata’) and frames a teaching on the limits of mere outward renunciation, preparing the ethical ground for guidance on right action and the proper spirit in which duties—such as royal and sacrificial responsibilities—should be undertaken.
