Vaiśampāyana said: “Janamejaya, having spoken thus, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra conveyed his intention to Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira. Yudhiṣṭhira, in obedience to his command, gathered all the requisites meant for charitable giving, and Dhṛtarāṣṭra then distributed them appropriately. The episode marks a turning from royal possession to ethical stewardship—wealth redirected toward dharma through regulated, purposeful generosity.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights dharma expressed as orderly generosity and impartial stewardship: resources are gathered and given not for personal display but in accordance with rightful instruction and proper distribution, reflecting ethical governance even amid withdrawal from worldly power.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra communicates his decision to Yudhiṣṭhira. Yudhiṣṭhira arranges all materials meant for giving, and Dhṛtarāṣṭra distributes them suitably—marking a practical step toward the elders’ ashrama-bound life and a reorientation of royal wealth toward religious merit.
