Vaiśampāyana said: “All of you should keep your eyes upon him—both in favorable times and in adverse. King Yudhiṣṭhira, Kuntī’s son, the jewel of the Kuru line, is the protector of you all. Therefore, in every season of fortune and misfortune alike, let your gaze rest on him with compassion and support.”

Educational Q&A

The verse emphasizes reciprocal dharma: a righteous king protects the people, and the people (and elders/attendants around him) should support and watch over him with compassion in both prosperity and adversity, sustaining ethical order through mutual responsibility.

In the Āśramavāsika context, Vaiśampāyana highlights Yudhiṣṭhira’s role as the Kuru lineage’s foremost king and guardian of the populace, urging those around him to remain attentive and benevolent toward him through changing circumstances.
