Observing the prescribed rites and pronouncing the name and lineage as required, they offered the water-oblation also for Gandhārī and for Pṛthā (Kuntī). Thereafter, intent on completing the purification rites and removing the state of impurity, they all stayed outside the city.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse underscores dharma as disciplined observance of prescribed rites: honoring the dead through proper identification (name and lineage) and maintaining ritual purity by observing śauca, including staying outside the settlement during the impurity period.
After the deaths, the survivors perform the formal water-offering for Gandhārī and Kuntī, reciting their name and gotra as required, and then remain outside the city while completing the purification observances associated with mourning.
