Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Departure for Forest Life

Vaiśampāyana said: Overwhelmed as though grief had entered into them, they took delight in nothing at all. Even when others spoke to them, they offered no response of appreciation.
The verse highlights how profound grief can eclipse pleasure, social reciprocity, and even the normal performance of duties—inviting reflection on compassion toward the bereaved and on the limits of worldly engagement after catastrophic loss.
Vaiśampāyana describes the condition of the people being spoken about: they are so consumed by sorrow that they find joy in nothing and do not properly acknowledge others even when addressed, indicating a city or court atmosphere weighed down by mourning.
