Vidura’s Message to Dhṛtarāṣṭra: Authorization for Dāna and Public Welfare (विदुरवाक्यम्—दानानुज्ञा)
yudhiṣṭhirasya jananī sā hi dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ | tvayā ca gāndhārīdevyā ca sevayā eṣā tava yaśasvinī vadhūḥ yudhiṣṭhirajananī kuntī svapateḥ loke prāpsyati | yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sākṣāt sanātanadharmasvarūpaḥ | ataḥ tasya mātur kuntīyāḥ sadgatau na saṃdehaḥ ||
Nārada said: “Kuntī, the mother of Yudhiṣṭhira, is indeed established in the eternal Dharma. By the devoted service rendered by you and by Queen Gāndhārī, this illustrious daughter-in-law of yours—Kuntī, who gave birth to Yudhiṣṭhira—will attain the world of her husband. For Yudhiṣṭhira is the very embodiment of the timeless Dharma; therefore there can be no doubt at all about his mother Kuntī’s blessed destiny.”
नारद उवाच
Devoted service (sevā) to elders and the righteous strengthens one’s spiritual merit and supports a blessed destiny; moreover, association with and motherhood of a person who embodies Dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira) is presented as a strong assurance of Kuntī’s sadgati.
Nārada consoles and instructs the royal women, stating that through the service rendered by the speaker addressed and by Queen Gāndhārī, Kuntī—Yudhiṣṭhira’s mother—will attain her husband’s realm, and that there is no doubt about her good end because Yudhiṣṭhira is the very form of eternal Dharma.
