गण्डोवाच वक्त्रैकदेशे गण्डेति धातुमेतं प्रचक्षते । तेनोन्नतेन गण्डेति विद्धि मानलसम्भवे,गण्डाने कहा--अग्निसे उत्पन्न होनेवाली कृत्ये! गडि धातुसे गण्ड शब्दकी सिद्धि होती है, यह मुखके एक देश--कपोलका वाचक है। मेरा कपोल (गण्ड) ऊँचा है, इसलिये लोग मुझे गण्डा कहते हैं

Transliteration

gaṇḍovāca vaktraikadeśe gaṇḍeti dhātum etaṁ pracakṣate | tenonnatena gaṇḍeti viddhi mānalasambhave ||

Translation

Gaṇḍa said: “The root (dhātu) ‘gaṇḍ’ is explained as denoting a particular part of the face—the cheek. Therefore, know, O one born of the Fire, that because my cheek is raised and prominent, people call me ‘Gaṇḍa.’”
