Puṣkara-Śapatha Itihāsa (Agastya–Indra Dispute at the Tīrthas) |
Bhīṣma uvāca—Yudhiṣṭhira! yaḥ puruṣaḥ kevalaṁ prātaḥkālaṁ sāyaṁkālaṁ ca bhuṅkte, madhye kiñcid api na aśnāti, sa sadā upavāsī iti mantavyaḥ. Bhāryāṁ gacchan brahmacārī ṛtau bhavati caiva ha; ṛtuvādī sadā ca syād dānaśīlas tu mānavaḥ.
Bhishma said: “Yudhishthira, a man who eats only at dawn and at dusk, taking nothing in between, should be regarded as one who is continually fasting. Likewise, a man who approaches his lawful wife only during her fertile season is to be counted as a brahmacārin (one practicing continence). And a person devoted to giving is to be understood as one who is ever committed to truth.”
