The Duty to Fulfill Promised Gifts
न हर्तव्यं विप्रधन क्षन्तव्यं तेषु नित्यश: । बालाश्व नावमन्तव्या दरिद्रा: कृपणा अपि,ब्राह्मणका धन कभी नहीं चुराना चाहिये। वे अपराध करें तो भी सदा उनके प्रति क्षमाभाव ही रखना चाहिये। वे बालक, दरिद्र अथवा दीन हों तो भी उनका अनादर नहीं करना चाहिये
na hartavyaṃ vipradhanaṃ kṣantavyaṃ teṣu nityaśaḥ | bālāś ca nāvamantavyā daridrāḥ kṛpaṇā api ||
Bhishma teaches that one must never steal the wealth of a brāhmaṇa. Even if brāhmaṇas commit faults, one should consistently maintain an attitude of forgiveness toward them. Even when they are mere children, impoverished, or pitiable, they are not to be treated with contempt—reverence and restraint are required as a matter of dharma.
