Yudhiṣṭhira said: “The Vedas and the Upaniṣads themselves prescribe sacrificial gifts (dakṣiṇā) for every rite. And for all sacrifices it is specifically enjoined that land, cows, and gold be given as the priestly fee.”

Ritual action is not complete without ethical giving: the tradition authoritatively links sacrifice with dakṣiṇā, emphasizing that offerings to priests and support of sacred work—especially through land, cows, and gold—are a dharmic obligation rather than an optional add-on.
Yudhiṣṭhira is speaking within the Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction on dharma, invoking Vedic and Upaniṣadic authority to clarify what kinds of gifts are prescribed as dakṣiṇā across sacrificial rites.
