Suvarṇa-dāna: Kārttikeya’s Origin and the Defeat of Tāraka

Bhishma said: On the lovely summit of Mount Kailāsa—frequented by gods and Gandharvas—she stood on a single foot, established in the highest discipline of yoga. By that severe austerity, even the gods, sages, and mighty Nāgas were distressed, for her concentrated tapas shook the worlds and compelled divine attention.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights tapas and yogic steadiness as ethically potent: disciplined self-restraint, undertaken for a dharmic aim, becomes a force that can move even divine beings and reshape events. It implies that inner mastery and sincerity carry real moral and cosmic weight.

Bhīṣma describes Surabhī performing intense austerity on Mount Kailāsa, standing on one foot and abiding in supreme yoga. Her tapas becomes so powerful that gods, sages, and Nāgas feel afflicted—signaling that her vow is extraordinary and demands recognition within the unfolding divine narrative connected with Aditi’s austerities.
