Bhīṣma (the Grandsire) said: “The man who completely abstains from eating any kind of meat, who remains continually absorbed in sacred contemplation and is devoted to dharma; who honors his mother and father, is committed to truth, and serves the brāhmaṇas—such a blameless person, endowed with these virtues, attains the eternal and imperishable realm of Goloka.”

Educational Q&A

Bhīṣma presents a dharmic ideal: non-violence expressed through abstaining from meat, steady devotion and self-cultivation, truthfulness, reverence for parents, and humble service to brāhmaṇas. Such disciplined ethical living is said to lead to an exalted posthumous state (Goloka).

In the Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma. Here he lists virtues and observances that define a blameless person and states the spiritual result of such conduct—attainment of the eternal realm called Goloka.
