Gopradāna-Māhātmya: Inquiry into Goloka
गच्छ त्वं ब्राह्मणग्रामं ततो गत्वा तमानय । अगस्त्यं गोत्रतश्नापि नामतश्नापि शर्मिणम्
gaccha tvaṃ brāhmaṇagrāmaṃ tato gatvā tam ānaya | agastyaṃ gotrataś cāpi nāmataś cāpi śarmiṇam ||
Bhīṣma said: “Go to the settlement of the brāhmaṇas. Having gone there, bring him here—Agastya, the auspicious one—identifying him both by his gotra (lineage) and by his very name.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse emphasizes careful, respectful identification of a revered person—recognizing both lineage (gotra) and personal name—reflecting the dharmic importance of social identity, proper address, and precision when dealing with Brahmins and sages.
Bhīṣma issues a direct instruction to someone to go to a Brahmin settlement and fetch a particular person, specifying that the person to be brought is Agastya, to be identified unambiguously by both his gotra and his name.
