Bhishma said: “One should indeed enter into marriage and beget sons. For, O scion of the Kuru line, the gain of a son surpasses every other gain.”
भीष्म उवाच
Bhishma teaches that entering marriage and producing offspring is a key duty of the householder, and that the ‘gain of a son’—symbolizing continuity of family, social obligations, and ritual responsibilities—is regarded as superior to other worldly gains.
In Anushasana Parva, Bhishma is instructing a Kuru prince (addressed as ‘Kauravya’ and ‘Kurunandana’) on dharma. Here he gives direct prescriptive counsel about marriage and progeny as part of righteous living.
