Bhīṣma said: “O great king, food and medicinal herbs, and also grasses and creepers, arise from water; for from these the very life-breath of living beings comes forth and is sustained, O lord of the people. Indeed, Soma—the lord among the celestial powers—manifested from water. Nectar (amṛta), ambrosia (sudhā), the sacrificial offerings ‘svāhā’ and ‘svadhā’, as well as food, herbs, grass, and vines are born of water; through them the lives of all creatures arise and are nourished.”
