Bhishma said: “By restraining and giving up indulgence in tastes, one is followed by good fortune. By restraining and giving up meat, one gains livestock and also sons.”

Dietary restraint is presented as a dharmic practice: curbing attachment to taste brings auspicious fortune, and abstaining from meat—reducing harm and indulgence—yields prosperity symbolized by livestock and the blessing of sons.
In Anushasana Parva, Bhishma instructs on dharma and right conduct. Here he gives a concise rule-of-conduct verse connecting food discipline (withdrawal from tastes and meat) with beneficial results, as part of his broader ethical guidance.
