Adhyāya 57: Tapas–Dāna Phala
On the Fruits of Austerity and Giving
bhīṣma uvāca | ye icchāṃ kṛtvā svatapasā śaktayā dvitīyān lokān sraṣṭuṃ śaknuvanti | iha pṛthivyāṃ brāhmaṇā eva pavitravāk pavitrabuddhayaḥ pavitrakarmāṇaś ca bhavanti || utsahed iha kṛtvaiva ko 'nyo vai cyavanād ṛte | brāhmaṇyaṃ durlabhaṃ loke rājyaṃ hi sulabhaṃ naraiḥ ||
Bhishma said: Those who, by mere resolve, can by the power of their austerity even bring forth other worlds—such are they. On this earth, it is the Brahmins alone who are marked by purity of speech, purity of understanding, and purity of conduct. Who else here, except the great sage Cyavana, could accomplish so mighty a deed? For among men, kingship may be easily obtained, but true Brahminhood—genuine spiritual and ethical excellence—is exceedingly rare in the world.
