Cyavana–Kuśika Dialogue on Hospitality, Service, and Lineage Questions

Bhishma said: “Know, O Bharata, that besides the previously described kinds of sons, there are also six called ‘apadhvaṃsaja’ (offspring arising from approved mixed unions in the forward order) and those termed ‘kānīna’ and ‘apasada’ (offspring from disapproved mixed unions in the reverse order). Thus these varieties are enumerated; understand them as recognized categories of sons within the dharma-discourse on lineage and social order.”
The verse continues a dharma-classification of ‘sons’ for purposes of lineage and social/legal recognition, stressing that multiple categories—especially those arising from mixed unions—are still to be understood within an enumerated framework of dharma discourse.
In Anushasana Parva, Bhishma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma topics. Here he lists additional categories of sons—apadhvaṃsaja, kānīna, and apasada—within a broader enumeration of twenty types mentioned in the surrounding passage.
