Cyavana’s Water-Vow and the Ethics of Cohabitation (स्नेह-सम्वास-धर्मः)
विहितं दृश्यते राजन् सागरान्तां च मेदिनीम् | क्षत्रियो हि स्वधर्मेण श्रियं प्राप्रोति भूयसीम् । राजा दण्डधरो राजन रक्षा नान्यत्र क्षत्रियात्,राजा युधिष्ठिर! लक्ष्मी, राज्य और कोष--यह सब शास्त्रमें क्षत्रियोंक लिये ही विहित देखा जाता है। राजन! क्षत्रिय अपने धर्मके अनुसार समुद्रपर्यन्त पृथ्वी तथा बहुत बड़ी सम्पत्ति प्राप्त कर लेता है। नरेश्वर! राजा (क्षत्रिय) दण्ड धारण करनेवाला होता है। क्षत्रियके सिवा और किसीसे रक्षाका कार्य नहीं हो सकता
vihitaṃ dṛśyate rājan sāgarāntāṃ ca medinīm | kṣatriyo hi svadharmeṇa śriyaṃ prāpnoti bhūyasīm | rājā daṇḍadharo rājan rakṣā nānyatra kṣatriyāt | rājā yudhiṣṭhira |
Bhīṣma said: “O King, it is laid down in the śāstras that sovereignty over the earth up to the encircling ocean is ordained for the Kṣatriya. Indeed, by adhering to his own dharma, a Kṣatriya attains great prosperity and splendor. O King, the ruler is the bearer of the rod of punishment; protection cannot be secured from any other quarter than the Kṣatriya. O King Yudhiṣṭhira.”
