Dāyavibhāga (Inheritance Apportionment) and Household Precedence — Dialogue of Yudhiṣṭhira and Bhīṣma
बन्धुभि: समनुज्ञाते मन्त्रहोमौ प्रयोजयेत् । तथा सिद्धयन्ति ते मन्त्रा नादत्ताया: कथंचन,कन््याके कुट॒म्बीजनोंकी अनुमति मिलनेपर वैवाहिक मन्त्र और होमका प्रयोग करना चाहिये, तभी वे मन्त्र सिद्ध (सफल) होते हैं, अर्थात् वह मन्त्रोंद्वारा विवाह किया हुआ माना जाता है। जिस कन्याका माता-पिताके द्वारा दान नहीं किया गया उसके लिये किये गये मन्त्र-प्रयोग किसी तरह सिद्ध नहीं होते, अर्थात् वह विवाह मन्त्रोंद्वारा किया हुआ नहीं माना जाता
bandhubhiḥ samanujñāte mantrahomau prayojayet | tathā siddhyanti te mantrā nādattāyāḥ kathaṃcana ||
Bhishma said: “When the girl’s kinsmen have given their consent, one should employ the marriage mantras and perform the accompanying fire-offering (homa). Only then do those mantras become effective and accomplish their purpose. For a girl who has not been duly given in marriage by her guardians, the ritual application of mantras does not succeed in any way—such a union is not regarded as a properly sanctified marriage by Vedic rite.”
