यस्यास्तु न भवेद्‌ भ्राता पिता वा भरतर्षभ । नोपयच्छेत तां जातु पुत्रिकाधर्मिणी हि सा,भरतश्रेष्ठ! जिस कन्याके पिता अथवा भाई न हों, उसके साथ कभी विवाह नहीं करना चाहिये; क्योंकि वह पुत्रिका-धर्मवाली मानी जाती है

Transliteration

yasyāstu na bhaved bhrātā pitā vā bharatarṣabha | nopayacchet tāṃ jātu putrikādharmiṇī hi sā ||

Translation

Bhishma said: “O bull among the Bharatas, if a maiden has neither a brother nor a father, one should never accept her in marriage; for she is regarded as one who stands under the rule of the putrikā-duty, where the daughter functions as the means for continuing the lineage.”
