A disciple’s dharma includes unwavering loyalty to the guru’s household—especially protecting the guru’s wife with vigilance and self-restraint, treating her with the same reverence as one’s own mother.
Bhishma introduces an ancient exemplum: he tells the listener that he has heard of Vipula, a noble disciple, who once protected his teacher’s wife, and he now begins to narrate the manner of that protection.
