Bhīṣma said: In those days there was a venerable Bhārgava sage, the illustrious Ṛcīka—born as Cyavana’s own son—renowned by name and firmly established in extensive austerities. He sought that maiden in marriage, approaching King Gādhi for her hand.
भीष्म उवाच
The verse highlights tapas (disciplined austerity) and personal merit as ethical foundations for social actions like seeking marriage. It implies that legitimacy and honor arise from character and spiritual discipline, not merely status or force.
Bhīṣma introduces the sage Ṛcīka—Cyavana’s son, famed for great austerities—and states that he requested a certain maiden (King Gādhi’s daughter) in marriage, setting up the ensuing story about their alliance and its consequences.
