Viśvāmitra-janma: Ṛcīka–Satyavatī–Gādhi and the Charu Exchange
tām uvāca tato mātā sutāṁ satyavatīṁ tadā | putri pūrvopapannāyāḥ kuruṣva vacanaṁ mama ||
Then the mother said to her daughter Satyavatī: “My child, by virtue of being your mother I have a prior claim upon you; therefore, comply with my request.”
The verse highlights a dharmic rationale for obedience: a mother’s instruction carries ethical weight because her relationship establishes a prior and legitimate authority, implying that duties arise from recognized bonds and social roles.
Within Bhīṣma’s narration, Satyavatī’s mother speaks directly to her, urging her to follow her command, explicitly grounding the request in the mother’s precedence and rights as a parent.
