tvāṃ tu śocāmi yo labdhvā brāhmaṇyaṃ na bubhūṣase |

Matanga said: “I grieve for you—because, having obtained the state and dignity of Brahminhood, you do not wish to uphold it. It is for your sake that I lament: you possess by birth what should be embraced through conduct, yet you refuse to make it your own.”

Educational Q&A

Brahminhood is not merely a birth-label but a dharmic ideal to be consciously upheld; possessing the status yet refusing its ethical discipline is a cause for lament.

Matanga addresses the other party with reproachful compassion, saying he grieves for them because they have obtained Brahminhood yet do not wish to embrace or live according to it.
