vṛtticchedaṁ gṛhacchedaṁ dāracchedaṁ ca bhārata | mitracchedaṁ tathāśāyās te vai nirayagāminaḥ ||
Bhīṣma said: O Bhārata, those who cut off another’s livelihood, ruin homes, separate husband and wife, sow discord among friends, and shatter a person’s hopes—such people surely become destined for hell.
भीष्म उवाच
Deliberately harming the foundations of another person’s life—income, home, marriage, friendships, and hope—is a grave adharma with severe karmic consequence, described here as leading to niraya (hell).
In the Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma and moral conduct. This verse lists specific social harms and warns of their spiritual and posthumous consequences.
