Vāyudeva said: “I shall declare a brief selection of the names of the great Lord Śiva, whose source is the Unmanifest, who is without beginning or end and is the causal ground of the world. (He is) Hiraṇyabāhu, whose arms shine like gold; Guhāpāla, the guardian of the cave for those who enter within; the destroyer of formidable inner foes; the embodiment of supreme bliss; the conqueror of desire; and the master of the senses.”
वायुदेव उवाच
The verse frames devotion as inseparable from ethical discipline: Śiva is praised not only as cosmic cause (avyakta-yoni) but also as the exemplar of inner victory—conquering desire and mastering the senses—implying that true worship aligns with self-control and inward purification.
Vāyudeva begins a concise enumeration of Śiva’s names/epithets. The listed names highlight both metaphysical stature (rooted in the Unmanifest) and yogic-protective functions (guardian of the ‘cave’ for inward-entering seekers), while emphasizing triumph over inner enemies like desire.
