तस्माद् दद्यान्न याचेत पूजयेद् धार्मिकानपि । सुभाषी प्रियकृच्छान्त: सर्वसत्त्वाविहिंसक:
tasmād dadyān na yāceta pūjayed dhārmikān api | subhāṣī priyakṛc chāntaḥ sarvasattvā-vihiṃsakaḥ ||
Bhīṣma said: “Therefore one should give in charity oneself and not beg from others. One should honor the righteous, speak well, act for the good of all, remain calm in disposition, and refrain from harming any living being.”
भीष्म उवाच
Bhīṣma outlines an ethical ideal: be a giver rather than a beggar, revere the righteous, speak kindly and truthfully, work for others’ welfare, maintain inner calm, and practice non-violence toward all beings.
In Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma—lying on the bed of arrows—continues instructing Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma. This verse is part of his practical guidance on daily conduct and moral discipline.
