Vāyu said: Having taken his stand in severe austerity, and upon beholding the Lord, he then praised Him. Seeking the vision of that deity who, becoming the very life-breath and living principle, abides within as a mind-formed radiance, the sage Taṇḍi practiced intense penance for many years. When he attained that divine sight, the great seer offered praise to Śiva, the Lord of the universe, in this manner.

Educational Q&A

Steadfast austerity undertaken with a pure longing for divine vision culminates in direct encounter (darśana), which naturally expresses itself as reverent praise; the passage also frames the deity as inwardly present as the life-breath and as an inner radiance.

Vāyu introduces how the sage Taṇḍi performed severe penance for many years to behold the indwelling deity; after attaining that vision, Taṇḍi begins a hymn of praise to Śiva, the Lord of the universe.
