Discerning Dharma in Accord with Time
एष दीर्घायुषां मार्ग: सुवृत्तानां सुकर्मिणाम् । प्राणिहिंसाविमोक्षेण ब्रह्मणा समुदीरित:
eṣa dīrghāyuṣāṁ mārgaḥ suvṛttānāṁ sukarmiṇām | prāṇihiṁsāvimokṣeṇa brahmaṇā samudīritaḥ ||
This is the path of the long-lived—of those whose conduct is noble and whose deeds are righteous. Brahmā himself has proclaimed this way: it is attained through release from harming living beings, by renouncing violence toward all creatures.

Non-violence (ahiṁsā)—specifically, freeing oneself from the harming of living beings—is presented as the foundational discipline that leads to righteous character and even long life; it is endorsed as an authoritative dharmic path taught by Brahmā.
Maheśvara is instructing his listener on a dharmic ‘path’ associated with virtuous, long-lived people, grounding the teaching in divine authority by stating that Brahmā proclaimed it, and identifying renunciation of violence toward all beings as the means to attain it.
