उमोवाच भगवन् सर्वभूतेश शूलपाणे महाव्रत । संशयो मे महान् जातस्तन्मे व्याख्यातुमहसि
umovāca bhagavan sarvabhūteśa śūlapāṇe mahāvrata | saṃśayo me mahān jātas tan me vyākhyātum arhasi ||
Umā said: “O Blessed Lord—Lord of all beings, bearer of the trident, great in sacred vows—a great doubt has arisen in me. Please explain it to me.”
नारद उवाच
The verse models dharmic inquiry: when genuine doubt arises, one should approach a worthy authority with humility and request a clear explanation, treating knowledge as something received through respectful dialogue.
Within Nārada’s narration, Umā addresses Śiva using reverential epithets and states that a serious doubt has arisen; she asks him to explain the matter, setting up the forthcoming instruction.
