Adhyāya 142: Cyavana, the Devas’ Arrogance, and Vāyu’s Counsel on Protecting Brāhmaṇas
rājā sumanyunā bhakṣya-bhojya-padārthānāṃ parvata-sadṛśān bahūn nikṣepān kṛtvā tān śāṇḍilyāya dānaṃ dattavān; tena sa svargaloke sthānaṃ prāptavān. nāmnā ca dyutimān nāma śālvarājo mahādyutiḥ; dattvā rājyam ṛcīkāya gato lokān anuttamān mahātejasvī.
Bhishma said: King Sumanyu heaped up mountain-like piles of edible provisions and delightful foods and gave them in charity to Shandilya; by that meritorious gift he gained a place in heaven. Likewise, the illustrious Shalva king named Dyutiman—radiant and mighty—handed over his kingdom to the sage Richika and departed to the unsurpassed worlds, showing the power of generosity and the renunciation of sovereignty for higher attainment.
