iti vedoktam ṛṣibhiḥ purastāt parikalpitam | idānīṃ caiva naḥ kṛtyaṃ purastāc ca pariśrutam ||
“Thus has this been laid down from of old by the seers, in accordance with the Veda. We too have heard of it from ancient times, and even now it is our duty to carry out this Vedic injunction.”

Vyāsa affirms that a certain rule of conduct being discussed is not novel: it was prescribed long ago by ṛṣis in line with the Veda, is well-known by tradition, and therefore must be followed now as an obligation.
