मानसतीर्थ-शौचप्रशंसा | Praise of the ‘Mental Tīrtha’ and the Marks of Purity

Bhishma said: “I have explained, in due sequence, the discipline whose essence is the fruit of fasting. O Partha, just as the fruit of sacrifice is obtained, so too have poor men obtained the fruit of sacrifice through these fast-based vows. O best of the Bharatas, I have set forth for you—step by step and in detail—the highest ordinance of sacrifices, and within it I have made clear the merit that arises from fasting. O son of Kunti, even those without wealth, by undertaking these vows of fasting, have attained the same reward as that of sacrifices.”

Educational Q&A

Fasting-based vows can yield merit comparable to that of elaborate sacrifices, making spiritual reward accessible even to those who lack wealth.

Bhishma continues instructing the listener (addressed as Partha/Kuntinandana and ‘best of the Bharatas’) by summarizing that he has explained sacrificial ordinances in order and highlighting that the fruit of sacrifice can be attained through upavasa-vratas, even by the poor.
