Bhīṣma said: “So many years are declared for the wise man’s stay in Brahmaloka: as many drops of water as a rain-cloud pours down upon Jambūdvīpa, for that many thousands of years is his residence in Brahmaloka said to last.”

Educational Q&A

The verse emphasizes the immense, almost immeasurable reward (in duration) that accrues to a wise and meritorious person: spiritual merit leads to a prolonged stay in the highest heavenly realm, expressed through a vast natural simile (countless raindrops).

Bhīṣma, instructing on dharma and the fruits of righteous conduct, describes the length of residence in Brahmaloka for a wise person, using the number of raindrops falling on Jambūdvīpa as a measure for ‘thousands of years’ of heavenly dwelling.
