Praise of Ācāra as the Basis of Longevity, Fame, and Prosperity

आचारलक्षणो धर्म: संतश्षारित्रलक्षणा: । साधूनां च यथावृत्तमेतदाचारलक्षणम्‌,सदाचार ही धर्मका लक्षण है। सच्चरित्रता ही श्रेष्ठ पुरुषोंकी पहचान है। श्रेष्ठ पुरुष जैसा बर्ताव करते हैं; वही सदाचारका स्वरूप अथवा लक्षण है

Bhīṣma uvāca: ācāra-lakṣaṇo dharmaḥ, santaś cāritra-lakṣaṇāḥ | sādhūnāṃ ca yathā-vṛttam etad ācāra-lakṣaṇam ||

Bhishma said: “Dharma is recognized by right conduct (ācāra). The virtuous are known by their good character. Whatever the good and disciplined actually practice in life—such lived behavior is precisely what is meant by ‘proper conduct’ and serves as the mark of dharma.”
