Bhīṣma teaches a rule of prudent conduct: a truly intelligent man should not look at his own face in a dirty mirror, and he should never approach an unknown woman—or a pregnant woman. The counsel emphasizes restraint, cleanliness, and avoidance of situations that invite moral confusion, social suspicion, or harm.

Maintain purity and discretion: avoid degrading or misleading self-regard (the dirty mirror) and avoid morally risky or socially harmful encounters (approaching unknown women or pregnant women).
In Bhīṣma’s instruction on dharma and proper conduct, he lists practical prohibitions meant to guide a householder’s behavior and protect personal integrity and social order.
