Śama-prāptiḥ — Gautamī–Lubdhaka–Pannaga–Mṛtyu–Kāla-saṃvāda
Restraint through the Analysis of Karma and Time
गौतग्युवाच का नु प्राप्ति्गहा शत्रुं निहत्य का कामाप्ति: प्राप्य शत्रुं न मुक्त्वा । कस्मात् सौम्याहं न क्षमे नो भुजड़े मोक्षार्थ वा कस्य हेतोर्न कुर्यामू,गौतमी बोली--अर्जुनक! शत्रुको कैद करके उसे मार डालनेसे क्या लाभ होता है; तथा शत्रुको अपने हाथमें पाकर उसे न छोड़नेसे किस अभीष्ट मनोरथकी प्राप्ति हो जाती है? सौम्य! क्या कारण है कि मैं इस सर्पके अपराधको क्षमा न करूँ? तथा किसलिये इसको छुटकारा दिलानेका प्रयत्न न करूँ?
Gautamy uvāca: kā nu prāptir gṛhā śatruṁ nihatya, kā kāmāptiḥ prāpya śatruṁ na muktvā? kasmāt, saumya, ahaṁ na kṣame no bhujaṅgaṁ; mokṣārthaṁ vā kasya hetoḥ na kuryām?
Gautamī said: “What gain is there in capturing an enemy only to kill him? And what cherished aim is fulfilled by having an enemy in one’s power and yet not releasing him? Gentle one, for what reason should I not forgive this serpent’s offense? And for whose sake should I not strive to secure his release?”
