Ādi-parva Adhyāya 97: Satyavatī’s appeal and Bhīṣma’s reaffirmation of satya

The Vasus replied: “King Śāntanu, the son of Pratīpa, renowned throughout the world, will be born among humans. He will be the one who becomes our begetter (father) in the mortal realm.” This response frames their descent into human life as governed by moral causality and providence: even divine beings, when bound by a condition or consequence, seek a righteous and celebrated human lineage through which their earthly birth will occur.
